L – Imdina

Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city and extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture. It is also called the “Silent City” as it is the old capital city of Malta. The city was founded as Maleth around 8th Century BC by Phoenician Settlers. Later renamed Melite by the Romans. Ancient Melite was larger than present-day Mdina, and it was reduced to its present size during the Byzantine or Arab occupation of Malta. During the latter period, the city adopted its present name, which derives from the Arabic word “Medina”. The city is surrounded by fortified walls and sits on top of one of the highest hills of Malta. Built in medieval times it served as a guard point to watch over the countryfrom invaders and even as the administrative centre in the era of the Order of St. John’s Cavaliers. Mdina may have lost its title as the capital city, but it kept its nobility through the centuries. Nowadays Mdina has attracted so many visitors from around the globe mainly because of its historic richness through its architecture.
